Mr Spence, of Low Jackfield Farm, Sutton-in-Craven, again presented the title winner at Skipton Auction Mart’s May rearing calf show and sale, (Mon, May 21) emulating previous championship successes in February and April this year.
Once again, it was a Limousin-cross youngster that secured top honours for Mr Spence. His best of breed bull calf, by the Genus sire Conan, out of a home-bred British Friesian cow, sold for £430 to Messrs Vickers and Richardson, of Bickley.
Mr Spence was also responsible for the top price Limousin heifer calf, sold at £380 to G Abbott & Sons, Dacre.
The reserve champion, the first prize British Blue bull calf from Robert Metcalfe, of RD Metcalfe & Son, Brearton, fell at £390 to Tony Binns, of Clint, Harrogate.
Top price in show of £452 went to the second prize British Blue bull calf from brothers Shaun and Peter Sowray, of Bishop Thornton.
The overall selling average of the 93 rearing calves forward was £184.62. Judge at the BOCM Pauls-sponsored monthly show was Garstang’s Peter Bartley.
At the weekly primestock sales, 50 prime cattle were forward, with prices peaking at £1,243, or 200.5p/kg, for a British Blue-x steer from J W Hall, Darnbrook. Steers averaged 184.4p/kg. In the 30 to 48-month section, the overall average was 138.98p/kg, or £841.73 per head, led at £1,029 by an Aberdeen Angus heifer from G&MA Lawn, Skipton.
Cull cows averaged 113.46 p/kg, or £717.43 per head, peaking at £1,173 for another Aberdeen Angus from Hurries Farm, Otterburn. The top per/kg price at 150.5p fell to a Limousin-x from KA&HL Fawcett, Barden.
With a turnout of 1,312 prime sheep, a larger show of new season lambs were a shade dearer on the week, with better quality twice crossed lambs up to 40kg generally making 220-230p/kg and first cross Suffolk lambs out of Mule ewes 200-215p/g.
The trade for hoggs and teeth up hoggs has slipped slightly, the best end achieving around 180p/kg. However, most were end of season sorts selling at around 150-160p/kg. Cast sheep were also a shade dearer, with plain horned ewes representing over a third of the entry.
Spring lambs sold to an overall average of £85.41 each, or 209.54p/kg, with JA&JM Wade, Cononley, heading the per head prices at £101.50 with a pen of Suffolks, and JD&V Towers, Farleton, the per weight prices at 230p/kg with a Charollais pen.
Hoggs and shearlings averaged £70.51 each, or 157.7p/kg. Cull ewes averaged £60.63, top price of £121 per head falling to DC Hall, Coniston Cold, while cast rams averaged £90.72, headed at £138.50 apiece by W Mason & Son, Appletreewick. Breeding sheep prices peaked at £210 for a pen of Mule hoggs and single lambs from RG Johnson & Son, Felliscliffe.
