BRP lamb butchery demo is rescheduled at Cockermouth Market
A butchery demonstration for local sheep producers highlighting
the market preference between lean and overfat lambs will be the
focus of an EBLEX Better Returns Programme (BRP) Evening Meeting
held at Cockermouth Market. This was postponed at the start of January and will now go ahead
on Monday 21 February at 7.30 pm, in association with Mitchells
Auction Company. The butchery demonstration highlights the fat trim from a lamb
that matches the main market demand and an overfat lamb - which
can make a difference of £6.50 to the producer *. The demo
will be given by local butcher Tony Harrison, accompanied by commentary
from BRP staff, drawing attention to ways in which lamb producers
can avoid price penalties for overfat lambs and reduce production
costs. Chris Lloyd, BRP Project Manager has been delighted at the level
of interest in the series of Evening Meetings. He said "The
meetings we have held over the season have proved very popular
with on average 60 to 70 producers turning up to each one. Producers
find the butchery demonstration particularly fascinating and take
some positive messages away from the evening." The event will also cover a range of other sheep topics, with
speakers addressing the impact of CAP reform on the English lamb
sector, the new EBLEX Quality Standard Mark, and better breeding
topics. Farmers can also get advice on aspects of their lamb marketing
and pick up their free copies of the BRP's Breeding and Selection
Manuals. The event is free, to ensure a place contact Sophie Whigham on

delivered by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) which
aims to help English sheep producers sharpen their breeding and
lamb selection skills to make more from their lambs. More information
