records of Devon Cattle go back to 1851 when Lt Col John Tanner Davy
of Rose Ash, near South Molton published the very first Davy’s
Devon Herd Book.
The success
of the Devon breed in Australia is associated with the ability to
produce top quality beef, both straightbred and as a cross, under
varying climatic conditions.
Devon cattle had an early start here in the U.S., a shipment of “red cattle’ brought from England in 1623 was more than likely what we now call the “Devon” breed.
